Device Matrix

A Device Matrix is a structured grid or table used by software testing teams to plan and manage testing across a diverse set of hardware and software configurations. The matrix outlines all the specific combinations of devices, operating systems, and other variables that need to be tested. This ensures that the application is thoroughly verified on the most critical platforms, preventing issues that might arise from platform-specific bugs or display problems.

Example: A company building a mobile app might create a Device Matrix for its new login feature. The matrix would list all the major devices and operating systems they need to support. The team can then use this matrix to plan their testing, ensuring they cover crucial combinations, such as:

  • iPhone 15 running iOS 18
  • Google Pixel 8 running Android 14
  • Samsung Galaxy S24 running Android 14
  • iPad Pro running iOS 18

This matrix ensures that a dedicated test case is run for each combination, confirming that the login feature is both functional and visually correct on every targeted device.
