WhatsApp is simplifying the way users access end-to-end encrypted backups with the introduction of passkey support. Soon, if you lose your device, you won’t need to hunt for a long password or 64-character encryption key. Instead, you can restore your chats using your fingerprint, face recognition, or screen lock code from your old device.
For years, WhatsApp backups didn’t include encryption. In 2021, Meta added end-to-end encryption for chat backups, letting users secure their data with either a password or a long encryption key. While effective, both methods required users to remember or store the credentials — a step that often caused headaches during restores. Passkeys remove that friction, making encrypted backups much more user-friendly.
WhatsApp, which surpassed 3 billion active users in May, said the feature will roll out gradually over the next several weeks and months, so you may need to keep an eye out for its availability.
To enable it, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and see if the passkey option is available for your account.
The update reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing push to combine strong security with convenience, ensuring that privacy doesn’t come at the cost of usability.
