Google’s Gemini Wants to Read Your Emails: Will You Let It?

Google is taking the next step in making its AI assistant a digital concierge that knows your schedule as well as you do—if you’re willing to let it in.

The company rolled out the beta version of “Personal Intelligence” for its Gemini AI on Wednesday. The update allows the chatbot to scan your Gmail inbox, scroll through your Google Photos, and track your YouTube habits to offer personalized advice and reminders before you even ask for them.

If you’ve been searching for golf gear and have photos of a local course, Gemini might proactively suggest a weekend tee time. If you have a flight confirmation buried in your emails, it could surface travel tips or weather updates for your destination. How fetch!

“This marks our next step toward making Gemini more personal, proactive, and powerful,” Google’s VP Josh Woodward said in a blog post.

The move highlights a growing trend in the tech industry to move AI away from being a simple search tool toward becoming a “proactive agent” that anticipates human needs. However, the convenience comes with a trade-off in privacy that may give some users pause.

Google is emphasizing that users have total control. The feature is strictly opt-in, and users can choose which specific apps—like Photos but not Gmail—the AI can see. The company also promised that the most sensitive data, such as medical records or bank statements, is off-limits for AI training.

For now, the feature is a perk for the few. It is only available to paying subscribers of Google’s "AI Pro" and "Ultra" plans in the U.S., though the company expects to expand it to free users and other countries later this year.
