Season 2 Episode #25: Barry Ehigiator studied biochemistry, human rights, and development economics before a research project convinced him that every growing industry runs on technology. Now he leads testing for mobile video and audio experiences at the BBC, covering iPlayer, Sounds, Sport, and News.

We explore what quality actually means when millions of users all expect something different, why the same feature can behave completely differently across iOS and Android, and the reason most teams fail at quality culture that has nothing to do with testing. Barry also shares how AI already turned weeks of audience feedback analysis into hours, and where streaming app testing is heading as audio and video formats start merging.

From biochemistry to BBC iPlayer - why studying why countries fail led him straight to QA

He studied biochemistry, international politics, and human rights before a research project on failing economies revealed that every growing industry runs on technology
His first UAT role made him curious about what happens behind the curtain of the products he was paying for
He only takes roles at companies with products people use daily, which is exactly what made the BBC a no-brainer
The path from security cameras in Sweden to testing iPlayer for millions was never planned but always deliberate

What does "good quality" even mean when millions of people all disagree?

A casual user, an audiophile, and someone using a screen reader all have completely different expectations of the same app
His framework starts with the organisation's purpose, then what users actually want, then bridges the gap using ISO quality standards
A phone going into a pocket, subtitles falling out of sync, and audio behaving differently on iOS versus Android all need catching
The same capability built once can behave completely differently across five apps on three platforms, and integration testing is how you find out

The reason most teams fail at building quality culture has nothing to do with testing

If quality is framed as a testing problem, it will never become part of the organisation's DNA
Shift left is only one piece - shift right is observability after release, and aligning centre is keeping stability during the build
The virtuous cycle is technology, processes, and people, but if the people piece is missing, everything else collapses
Testers are more than testers, but most don't understand how to contribute across the full development lifecycle

AI already turned weeks of work into hours - and the creative gap is only getting wider

He used AI to consolidate, classify, and cluster audience feedback for a master's project that would have taken far longer manually
AI will handle tooling and automated frameworks better over time, but creative exploratory testing stays human
Streaming apps are merging formats - audio apps adding video, video apps adding audio - and that creates testing dimensions nobody had before
His advice: take charge of your career, explore what interests you, but don't try to do everything at once
