Echo Cancellation Evaluation of Virtual Communication Platforms

Echo can significantly disrupt communication quality by causing feedback and confusion during calls. To assess how well different communication platforms handle echo, we performed an evaluation based on ITU-T P.831 standards, combining subjective listening tests and objective AECMOS metric analysis.

Types of scenarios tested:

  • Near-end single-talk (only local speaker talking)
  • Far-end single-talk (only remote speaker audio played back)
  • Double-talk (both local and remote speakers talking simultaneously)

Key takeaways:

  • MS Teams consistently led in echo cancellation performance across single-talk and double-talk conditions, maintaining strong echo suppression and minimal audio artifacts.
  • Competitor A achieved echo cancellation results close to MS Teams in far-end single-talk scenarios based on AECMOS scores.
  • In double-talk conditions, while MS Teams provided the cleanest experience, some competitors managed echo suppression well but introduced more artifacts or near-end signal degradation.
  • Objective results confirmed subjective trends, but also highlighted that in some aspects, such as loudness management and consistency across noise conditions, certain competitors delivered competitive performance.
